Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must have promoted vegetarianism in his/her school and/or community.
  4. Must attend a high school in the United States.
  5. Must be a student who will graduate from high school in the spring.

Description: This scholarship is offered to U.S. high school seniors who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities.

Application requirements for the Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship are:

  • Recommendation letter (3)
  • Activities list
Additional Information: Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the Vegetarian Resource Group each year will award $20,000 in college scholarship money to graduating U.S. high school students who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. The VRG defines vegetarians as not eating meat, fish, or fowl. Applicants will be judged on having shown compassion, courage, and a strong commitment in promoting a peaceful world through a vegetarian diet/lifestyle. Winners of the scholarships give permission to release their names to the media.

Award Amount: One award of $10,000 and two awards of $5,000 will be provided. All scholarships are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,667.

Applications are available online on the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) website. Applications are also available by contacting the VRG using the contact information listed. The application may be either the form found on the VRG's website or a neatly typed document containing the information requested. The student should see the VRG's website for specific information on what should be included. In addition to the application, the student must submit the following: an essay addressing the topics listed on the website; a copy of his/her transcripts or report cards for the past two years (photocopies are acceptable); three or more recommendations (including one or more from a teacher); and any documentation related to his/her promotion of vegetarianism in his/her high school and/or community, including photographs, newspaper stories, etc. The application and all attachments must be mailed to the address provided and be postmarked by the deadline date. Early submissions are encouraged.
