Number of Awards & Eligibility: 15 students are selected as Presidential Scholars annually. Presently, there are 64 scholars in the program.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be an incoming college freshman.
  4. Must attend Boston College in Massachusetts.
  5. Must demonstrate outstanding academic records.
  6. Must hold leadership roles in his/her school and be committed to and have a demonstrated interest in community service.

Description: U.S. students who demonstrate outstanding academic records, hold leadership roles in their school and are committed to and have a demonstrated interest in community service are eligible for this award. Students will be considered upon admission to Boston College in Massachusetts.

Application requirements for the Boston College Presidential Scholars Program are:

  • Application form

  • Official Transcript
  • BC Supplement
  • $75 app. fee
  • School report
  • Recommendation letters (3)
  • SAT I and two SAT subject test scores or ACT scores with writing
Additional Information: There is no minimum grade point average or SAT score requirement. Scholars are selected by the Committee on Admission based on academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, significant community service involvement and potential. Typically, the students selected are in the top one to two percent of the national pool of freshman applicants. Letters of invitation are sent out to the finalists in late December of each year. Finalists visit Boston College (at the University's expense) for a weekend in February to learn more about the University, the Presidential Scholars Program, and the city of Boston. Personal interviews with faculty members and administrative staff and a written essay done over the weekend serve as the basis for the final choice of Presidential Scholars, who are generally notified in March. Presidential Scholars receive a merit scholarship that covers full tuition at BC, regardless of financial need. If the merit award does not meet their financial aid requirements, scholars receive additional grant and aid resources sufficient to meet full need. The cost of summer programs is fully covered by a separate award.

Award Amount: Full tuition annually, valued at approximately $52,500. The award is renewable for three additional years provided the recipient maintains a 3.5 grade point average and remains a model citizen of the BC community throughout that time.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $787,500.

Applications for admission are available online from the Boston College (BC) website. There is not a separate application for this award. The student will be considered upon admission. A completed admissions application includes the BC Supplemental Application and Common Application. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit a $75 application fee; required essay; official secondary school transcript; secondary school report; two teacher recommendations; a counselor recommendation; and his/her scores for the SAT I and two SAT subject tests (or ACT scores with the writing portion). To be considered for the scholarship, the applicant must apply through BC's Early Action application process and meet the early action deadline of Nov. 1.
