Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered annually varies according to the number of eligible students.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a resident of Kansas.
  2. Must have received an honorable discharge or under honorable conditions (general) discharged from military service or be still in military service.
  3. Must meet the following military service criteria: have served in military service in international waters or on foreign soil in support of military operations at least 90 days after Sept. 11, 2001, or served less than such 90 days because of injuries during such military service; and have provided copies of military discharge papers (DD-214 form) or active duty orders whichever such paper or order indicate the location of such person’s deployment and indicate the person has served after Sept. 11, 2001, in any military operation for which the person received hostile fire pay.
  4. Must enroll at a Kansas public postsecondary institution.
  5. Must be a high school graduate (or the equivalent) or older and be currently pursuing an undergraduate degree.
  6. This award is for U.S. students.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for Kansas undergraduate students who are planning to attend a public postsecondary institution in Kansas. Students must have served in the military after Sept. 11, 2001.

Application requirements for the Kansas Military Service Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Proof of eligibility
  • FAFSA
Additional Information: Students may enroll at any of the following Kansas public postsecondary institutions: area vocational schools, area vocational-technical schools, community colleges, the municipal university, state educational institutions or technical colleges. Priority in awarding scholarships is given to those students with the greatest financial need. Graduate students are not eligible for this award.

Award Amount: Award amounts are determined based on the student's demonstrated financial need and enrollment status. Award amounts are for up to the cost of tuition and fees at an eligible Kansas public postsecondary institution. Awards may be renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. If the course of instruction requires a fifth year of undergraduate study. Recipients must reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,226.

Applications are available online from the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) website. In addition to the completed application, each applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD-214 form or active duty orders to the KBOR by mail at the address listed. Applications and required materials must be submitted to the KBOR by the priority deadline of May 1. Please note: Students must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the priority deadline of May 1. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices.
