Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered can vary depending on the funding available each year. Last year, 12 awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have publicly acknowledged that he/she is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered.
  3. Must be 16 years of age or older.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be registered for full-time attendance (12 semester hours if an undergraduate, or 9 semester hours if a graduate student) at a postsecondary education institution by Aug. 1. Please note: While preference will be given to full-time students, in some instances part-time students and those enrolled in continuing education programs may be considered.
  6. Must complete high school prior to the deadline date.
  7. Must have a current permanent home address in the Jacksonville (FL) metropolitan area OR be attending a college or university in the Jacksonville metropolitan area. This area is defined by PFLAG Jacksonville as Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns counties.

Description: This scholarship is available for students in the Jacksonville, FL metropolitan area who will have graduated high school by the deadline date and are 16 years of age or older. Applicants must self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender; and must plan to attend a postsecondary institution full time in the fall.

Application requirements for the PFLAG Jacksonville Chapter Scholarship Award are:

  • Application form
  • Transcript
  • Essays (5 short)
  • Recommendation letters (3+)
Additional Information: Applicants will be judged on the following criteria: academic potential and/or evidence of academic achievement; evidence of participation and leadership in school and community activities; clarity of future goals and determination to achieve; sense of personal integrity, ethical judgment, and honesty; maturity and positive sense of self as a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender person; service to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community; and his/her financial need and participation in efforts to supplement educational costs. (All financial information will remain strictly confidential). Recipients will also be required to submit a short essay or video describing the experience of being a PFLAG scholar. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received a PFLAG scholarship award.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable. The student will receive $1,000 for the fall semester, and if all eligibility requirements continue to be met, will receive an additional $1,000 for the spring semester.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available on the Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgendered (PFLAG) Jacksonville website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: an official or unofficial transcript from high school (or most current college transcript, if applicable); typed answers to the five short essay questions listed on the application; and three or more letters of reference, completed on the form provided in the application. At least one reference should be from a teacher, school counselor, or school administrator; one reference from a family member is acceptable. The recommender must complete his/her letter and enclose it in a sealed envelope, with his/her name across the flap. The applicant is responsible for collecting the envelopes and enclosing them along with his/her application and transcript. All applications and supporting materials must be sent to the address provided on or before the deadline date.
