Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 18 to 20 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
  3. Must be enrolled full time.
  4. Must be enrolled in one of the following programs with plans to work in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.): a M.A.C.E. (Master of Arts, Christian Education) program; or a M.Div. (Master of Divinity) program. M.Div. students in their first or second years must be enrolled as inquirers or candidates by Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) presbyteries before the application deadline to be considered for an award; students in their third year must be candidates. M.A.C.E. students are not required to be inquirer/candidate, but must be recommended by the Committee on Preparation for Ministry.
  5. Must be a racial ethnic student (e.g., African American, Alaska Native, Asian American, Hispanic American, or Native American).
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  7. Must have been awarded the Presbyterian Study Grant and have remaining financial need.
  8. Must attend a theological seminary related to or in covenant with Presbyterian Churches (U.S.A.). The following schools are eligible: Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Columbia Theological Seminary, University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, McCormick Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, San Francisco Theological Seminary, Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Auburn Theological Seminary, and Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico.
  9. Must be working on obtaining his/her first graduate degree. Students who already have one of the eligible degrees and are working on another are not eligible for this scholarship.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. graduate students who are in their first year of study, are members of the Prebyterian Church (U.S.A.), and attend a school that is related to or in covenant with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Students must be enrolled in one of the following programs with plans to work in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.): a MACE (Master of Arts, Christian Education) program; or a M.Div. (Master of Divinity) program. Applicants must be racial ethnic students (e.g., African American, Alaska Native, Asian American, Hispanic American, or Native American).

Additional Information: The Racial Ethnic Supplemental Grant is part of the Theological Grant and Loan Program. This program is for theological students preparing to serve in a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregation. Students must demonstrate financial need. Only students eligible for award will be submitted to the Presbyterian Study Grant reading committee. The PSG reading committee will consider the merits of eligible students and select students for award. If the student is eligible for a supplemental award the supplemental award will be determined by staff after the Presbyterian Study Grant has been awarded. The Racial Ethnic and Native American Supplemental Grants may not be used to replace any portion of the Presbyterian Study Grant.

Award Amount: $500 to $1,000 annually, renewable for up to three years. In order to renew the award, the student must submit a complete application package each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available on the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (PC-USA) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a completed 'Biographical Questionnaire' (part of the application); a resume or curriculum vitae of two pages or less that includes academic background, most recent employment, service, and accomplishments/awards; a double-spaced essay of 1,000 words on the topic listed on the application; an endorsement his/her faculty adviser or a professor. A first-year student may seek endorsement from the director of admissions at the seminary he/she plans to attend if no advisor or instructor is readily available. The application and all supporting materials must be emailed by the deadline date. Please note: To be eligible, the student must also file his/her FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by June 1. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The PC-USA will send a 'Financial Information Form' to the student's financial aid office for completion after the student has submitted his/her application. The student's FAFSA must be on file in order for this form to be completed.
