Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must enroll full time.
  3. Must attend a Forsyth County (NC) high school and reside in The Winston-Salem Foundation's service area.
  4. Must be a graduating high school senior.
  5. Must have a cumulative unweighted grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  6. Must intend to major in education or hospitality.
  7. Must plan to attend a historically black college or university (HBCU) in the United States.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to high school seniors who attend a Forsyth County (NC) high school and plan to attend an HBCU to major in education or hospitality. Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and demonstrate financial need.

Additional Information: Applicants must demonstrate financial need, but eligibility is not restricted to lower incomes. The student's financial need and merit will be equally weighted. In order to be eligible to apply for financial aid from the Foundation, 50 percent or more of the student's college courses must be taken in a traditional classroom setting. A Student Aid committee of The Winston-Salem Foundation will select recipients. The committee reserves the right to rescind an award should a recipient's circumstances change, such as failure to graduate from high school or failure to enroll at an accredited institution. The Foundation reserves the right to withhold the award in the event that no applicants are deemed to meet the qualifications.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.Scholarships will be applied to the cost of undergraduate tuition, fees, room and board, and other college expenses. Once recipient(s) have been selected, checks will be issued jointly to the college and to the recipient, and will be mailed to the recipient's home address for the student to deliver to the college's financial aid office. Separate checks will be issued for fall and spring semesters. Check processing requires approximately two weeks.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Program information is available on the Winston-Salem Foundation website. To apply for this award, the student must complete the Foundation's Common Application in its entirety. The student must register an account with his/her email address to access the application. The online application system will automatically identify those scholarship opportunities for which the student appears to be eligible based on information he/she enters in the "Basic Information and Qualifying Criteria" section of the application. The student may apply for all scholarships for which he/she is eligible via the Common Application. In addition to a completed Common Application, the student must submit the following materials: high school grade transcript through at least the first semester of the 12th grade; a copy of his/her acceptance letter to a nursing program; and a signed copy of his/her parents' federal tax return from last year. The application and all supplemental materials must be received by the deadline indicated in order to receive consideration.
