Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 1,000 awards granted each year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Montana.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older and be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.
  5. Must attend an eligible Montana postsecondary institution.
  6. Must demonstrate substantial financial need.

Description: This award is available to Montana resident undergraduate students who are attending an eligible Montana postsecondary institution. Students must demonstrate financial need, as determined by completing the FAFSA.

Additional Information: The Montana Higher Education Grant (MHEG) is the original state appropriated need based grant program in Montana. Along with the State Work Study program, MHEG first received funding during the 1975-1976 academic year under its original name, the Montana State Student Incentive Grant. Funds are awarded to Montana resident students who demonstrate exceptional financial need as determined by the FAFSA. During recent award years, over $600,000 was awarded to more than 1,000 students. Early FAFSA filing is encouraged, as funding for the MHEG program is limited.

Award Amount: Award amounts may vary. In previous years, award amounts averaged at approximately $600 annually. Recipients may re-apply each year by completing the FAFSA.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $631.
