In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of Benton County in Arkansas.
  4. Must be a single parent with sole custody of one or more children under the age of 18.
  5. Must be pursuing a work-oriented course of study at one of the following schools in Arkansas: John Brown University, Northwest Arkansas Community College, Northwest Technical Institute, the University of Arkansas, or the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences.
  6. Must be a high school graduate or the equivalent.
  7. Must be the head of the household.

Description: Single parents pursuing undergraduate vocational degrees at eligible Arkansas schools may apply for this award. Students must reside in Benton County, Arkansas.

Application requirements for the Benton County Single Parent Scholarship are:

  • Application by appointment only
  • FAFSA
Additional Information: In addition to demonstrating financial need, the student must also be in the process of applying for or be the recipient of a Pell Grant. Application for the Pell Grant is made by filing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. This scholarship is intended to provide support to single parents looking for higher education opportunities that will lead to a greater self-sufficiency. The scholarship encourages students to enter school and prevents them from dropping out of school because of unexpected financial hardships.

Award Amount: $550 to $1,000 annually, depending on enrollment status, renewable for four to five years as long as the student maintains a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. The scholarship can be used for any expense related to the student's education, including transportation, child care, housing and utilities, medical insurance, school supplies, glasses, computers and desks, clothing and food for children, and other day-to-day necessities.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Students must call the Benton County Single Parent Scholarship Fund at the phone number listed and set up an appointment in order to begin the application process. Students must complete the online application and schedule an appointment with the Program Coordinator prior to the deadline date. Fall applications are available from April 1 to June 15, and spring applications are available from Sep. 1 to Oct. 15.
