Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to enroll or be currently enrolled in a professional degree program in architecture. A professional degree is either a five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree or a 4+2 pre-professional bachelor degree followed by a Master of Architecture degree.
  3. Must enroll in a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)-accredited program. A list of eligible schools is available online at www.naab.org/architecture_programs/home.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must be a minority and/or financially disadvantaged.
  6. Must be a high school senior, current college freshman, OR a technical school or community college student that has completed high school or its equivalent and plans to transfer into an eligible program.

Description: High school seniors, current college freshmen, and community/technical college graduates who will enroll in an NAAB-accredited architecture program are eligible for this award. Students must be minorities and/or financially disadvantaged.

Additional Information: The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Diversity Advancement Scholarship is provided annually to increase the ethnic and economic diversity of the architecture profession. African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and economically disadvantaged students are encouraged to apply if they are planning to enroll in a NAAB-accredited architecture program. All students must apply for other financial assistance in order to qualify for this scholarship. Judges will look for students who have creativity and vision that can advance the architecture profession well in to the future.

Award Amount: $3,000 to $4,000 annually, renewable every year until degree completion, up to a total of five years and a maximum of $20,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $17,500.

Applications will be available online from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) website in December/January. The student must set up a SlideRoom account to access the application. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: official transcripts for every school attended; SAT, ACT, and/or college entrance exam scores; a comprehensive essay explaining his/her interest in architecture and future career plans, including a candid description of any obstacles he/she has overcome; a resume of no more than two pages (optional); two or more letters of recommendation from an architect, an AIA component, a community design center representative, a guidance counselor or teacher, a director of a community, civic, or religious organization, or the dean, administrative head, or professor at a NAAB-accredited professional program; and two to three media samples. At least one sample must be an 8.5" x 11" freehand drawing or sketch of any real life object (objects, buildings, people, self-portrait, etc). Other samples may include freehand drawings or drafted floor plans or drawings completed using computer-aided design (CAD). Images should be no more than 5MB each and PDFs should be no more than 10MB each. Applications and all supporting documentation must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. EDT on the deadline date.
