Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards granted varies.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  3. Must enroll or plan to enroll at one of the five Virginia Space Grant Consortium universities (College of William and Mary, Hampton University, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) .
  4. Must major in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) field, and must demonstrate an interest in aerospace or supporting NASA's mission.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must plan to enroll or be enrolled in a program of full-time study.
  7. Students may apply prior to entering or at any time during their graduate programs.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. graduate students who have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and are enrolled in a field of study that includes coursework related to an understanding of or interest in aerospace. Students must enroll or plan to enroll at one of the five Virginia Space Grant Consortium universities.

Additional Information: The VSGC Graduate STEM Rresearch Fellowship program is a competivite scholarship program, funded by NASA and the Commonwealth of Virginia contributions, with a goal to encourage talented individuals to pursue careers in the aerospace industry that support NASA’s mission. Awardees will be required to certify through their academic department that basic research support of at least $5,000 in matching funds is also being provided before funds are released. These Fellowships are intended to enhance basic graduate support such as graduate research assistantships, graduate teaching assistantships, and non-federal scholarships and fellowships. The scholarship program requires students to participate in an active, identified research activity that has NASA or aerospace applications. The research must be supervised by a faculty mentor. Awardees are required to participate in the VSGC's annual Student Research Conference to be held in late March or early April. Participation includes attendance and active involvement throughout entire conference, a poster presentation (two 30-minute poster sessions), and submission of a research paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

Award Amount: A fellowships of $6,000 in add-on support to graduate students to supplement and enhance basic research support, renewable for one additional year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $18,000.

Applications are available on the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit the following: a statement of his/her academic goals; a plan of study, which should consist of an outline of indended coursework for the remainder of his/her undergraduate degree program; a resume of career/qualifications, any relevant education information and significant accomplishments; and unofficial transcripts from all institutions. Students must also provide the names and contact information for two references, one of which must be the student's faculty adviser. Letters of recommendation should assess the applicant's potential as well as his/her progress and academic achievements. VSGC will contact both references via email to request a letter of recommendation on behalf of the student. Applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on the deadline date.
