Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered to undergraduate students. One award offered to a graduate student.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must attend a college in the U.S.
  4. Must be a college sophomore, junior or senior to apply for this undergraduate award. The student must have at least one year of school remaining at the time the award is disbursed.
  5. Must enroll in a minimum of six credit hours per semester.
  6. Must have taken courses in photography or photojournalism.

Description: This award is for U.S. college sophomores, juniors and seniors who have taken courses in photography or photojournalism. The student must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester and must have at least one year of school remaining at the time the award is disbursed.

Additional Information: Scholarships will be awarded to those students whose work "tells a story", which may include a variety of subject matter and approaches (breaking news, sporting events, etc.). Jim Cox, who was a television photojournalist in Phoenix, always "told a story" through his work, whether it was in video or still photography. The student must have at least one year of school remaining when the award is disbursed. The award must be used at the beginning of the next semester or it will be forfeited and given to an alternate.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $15,000.

Students may view information about this award by going to the James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photographers website and clicking on 'Apply' in the left panel. Scholarship applications must be submitted between July 15 and November 15. The student must submit an application form and the following items: a brief essay (250 words or less) describing the student's interest in photography and the photograph(s) and/or video(s) he/she is submitting; a 'Teacher Mentor Form'; two letters of reference; all college transcripts; financial data; a release form; and a portfolio, which may contain up to five digital images (still potography) and two videos (three minutes or shorter in length). The student must label all files that are submitted with his/her name. Digital photos should be in the jpeg file format with a maximum of 800 pixels and no larger than 4MB. Images should be at monitor resolution. Video submissions should not be larger than 18MB and can be in the following formats: .mpg, ,avi, .mov, ,wmv, .mpeg, or .divx. All applications materials must be submitted online (unless otherwise directed) by the deadline date.
