Number of Awards & Eligibility: Twenty eight awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a middle school or high school student at the time of application.
  2. This award is for students in the U.S.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  4. Must be between the ages of 11-18.

Description: This scholarship contest is available for middle school and high school students in the U.S. Applicants must submit an original work of art, poetry, prose, or film that discusses a specific aspect of ocean pollution.

Application requirements for the Ocean Awareness Student Contest are:

  • Art
  • prose
  • poetry
  • or film submission
Additional Information: The 2021 Ocean Awareness Contest "WATER RISING" invites students to explore their connection to water and to creatively communicate the need to protect this vital resource. Submissions are accepted in: Visual Art, Creative Writing, Film, Interactive & Multimedia, Performing Arts: Music & Dance, and Poetry & Spoken Word. Deadline to enter: June 14th Winners are announced in November.

Award Amount: Awards range from $50 for honorable mention to $1,500 for the gold prize. All awards are provided annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $42,000.

Applications and information about this award can be found online at the From The Bow Seat website using the link provided. To be considered for this award, students must pick one aspect of ocean pollution and submit an original work in response. Submissions may be created as visual art works, prose, poetry, music, or film and must adhere to the guidelines described on the application for each form of media. Students must also submit a short written reflection that elaborates on the ideas and concepts that inspired the primary submission. Applications may be submitted individually or as part of a group collaboration and must be received no later than the deadline date.
