  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have an interest in art.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be enrolled in high school at the time of application.

Description: This contest is available to all high school students. The applicant must be attending school in the same state as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary that sponsors him/her.

Additional Information: Entries are first submitted to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary Patriotic Art Chairman for initial judging at the local level. The first-place winner of each Auxiliary will be sent to the Department Chairman for judging at the department level. (Students whose districts are holding a district contest will be judged at the district level before the department level.) The first-place winner from each department (51 in total, one from each state and the District of Columbia) will then be sent to the National Headquarters for judging at the national level. Only national winners will receive scholarships. Each entry will be judged on the originality of concept, presentation, and patriotism expressed; the content of how it relates to patriotism and the clarity of ideas; the design technique and total impact of work; and the uniqueness. Eligible students must attend school in the same state as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary unit that sponsors him/her. Home-schooled students are eligible; foreign exchange students are not. Past national winners are ineligible to compete again.

Award Amount: The first-place winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship. He/she will also receive a plaque and airfare plus two nights' lodging to attend the VFW Auxiliary National Convention. The first-place art will be featured on the cover of the 'VFW Auxiliary Magazine' and on the Auxiliary website. The second-place winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The third-place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship. The fourth-place winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship. The fifth through eighth place winners will receive a $500 scholarship. All national scholarships are offered annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,625.

This is an art contest. Contest information and an entry form are available on the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary website.To enter, the applicant must submit an original piece of artwork with a patriotic theme. The artwork must have been done during the current school year. Art must be on paper or canvas. Water color, pencil, pastel, charcoal, tempera, crayon, acrylic, pen-and-ink, or oil may be used. Digital art may be used but must be on paper or canvas (no discs will be accepted). Computer/digital art must be entirely the applicant's own; all images, photographs, art, etc. used must be original.Canvas entries must be on stretcher frames. Other entries must be matted on white (color mats are not permitted). Heavy paper should be used to reinforce the back of matted entries. Mounted and floating mats may also be used. The art should be no smaller than 8" x 10" but no larger than 18" x 24", not including mat. The applicant must include a completed entry form with his/her artwork and should attach it to the back of his/her piece. The entry form must be signed by his/her teacher. Please note: Applicants must be sponsored by a VFW Auxiliary unit or a foreign-based Auxiliary or Post. Pieces must be submitted to the sponsoring chapter by the deadline date.
