Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must pursue a degree in photojournalism.
  3. Must enroll full time.
  4. Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student or have been accepted to continue suspended studies.
  5. Must enroll at an accredited four-year institution in the United States or Canada.

Description: This award is available for U.S. and Canadian undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a degree in photojournalism. Students must be enrolled full time at an accredited four-year college or university, and demonstrate academic ability and financial need.

Additional Information: Bob East was a colorful and widely known veteran photographer at The Miami Herald. He died tragically from a surgical procedure accident in March 1985, after more than 45 years in the profession. All applicants must provide evidence of academic ability and financial need, including their grade point average as an indication that they can successfully complete college studies.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable. Please note: The scholarship award must be used at the beginning of the next semester. Otherwise, it will be forfeited and given to an alternate.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available online from the National Press Photographers Foundation (NPPF) website. Before beginning the online application, the student should prepare the following information: contact information for his/her faculty advisor; contact information for a faculty member who will be contacted to submit a recommendation; three short essays listing his/her academic and journalistic accomplishments, explaining his/her need for a scholarship, and stating his/her goals in visual journalism; and his/her overall grade point average.All applicants must submit a portfolio that contains up to 10 total entries. An "entry" is defined as a single picture, a multiple picture story, a multimedia story, or a website link at which the applicant has done significant interactive programming or design. Portfolios must be assembled and submitted according to the detailed instructions posted on the NPPF website.Application materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on the deadline date.
