Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 100 awards offered annually. Last year, 118 awards were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be currently enrolled or accepted as a full-time second-year student in a four-year academic program or as a full-time third-year student in a five-year program at an accredited college or university or university within the United States or U.S. territories.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must enroll full time.
  5. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  6. Must have and maintain a declared major in a discipline including, but not limited to, oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences; mathematics; engineering; remote sensing technology; and physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education that support NOAA's programs and mission. Related discipline areas of study may include: biological, social, and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; and teacher education.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for U.S. undergraduates majoring in a discipline area related to oceanic and atmospheric science. The student must be a college sophomore at the time of application, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: Applications are evaluated on the following criteria: relevant course work (30 percent); education plan and statement of career interest (40 percent); academic recommendations and/or endorsements (reference forms) (20 percent); and additional relevant experience related to diversity of education, extracurricular activities, honors and awards, non-academic and volunteer work, interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills (10 percent).

Award Amount: The award includes academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the nine-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650 per week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if re-appointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second nine-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the scholars with "hands-on" practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $22,500.

The student must register and create an account in order to complete the application. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit two essays, two academic references, and official transcript(s) for all institutions attended. The transcript must be sent by the institution directly to the mailing address provided. The application and all supporting materials must be completed and received by 11:59 p.m. EST on the deadline date. No new applications will be accepted after this time.
