Fannie and John Hertz Foundation
Successful applicants have the choice of two fellowship options: the 'Five Year Hertz' program that offers a $32,000 nine-month personal stipend and full tuition equivalent that is renewable for up to five years; or the 'Five-Year Coordinated' program that offers a $38,000 nine-month personal stipend and full tuition equivalent for the first two years of fellowship and a $5,000 per year supplemental stipend from Hertz for the remaining three years. The 'Five-Year Coordinated' program requires the awardee to accept a three-year fellowship from another source. The 'Five-Year Hertz' program is renewable annually (upon a showing of satisfactory progress toward receipt of the Ph.D. degree) for a total fellowship tenure of no more than five years.
Between 15 and 20 students are awarded a Hertz Fellowship annually.
The applicant must demonstrate evidence of exceptional creativity, a broad understanding of physical principles, and outstanding potential for innovative research. The applicant must morally commit to make his/her skills available to the United States in times of national emergency. Successful applicants will also possess the following qualities: exceptional intelligence and creativity; excellent technical education; orientation and commitment to the applications of the physical sciences; extraordinary accomplishment in technical or related professional studies; features of temperament and character conducive to high attainment as a technical professional; appropriate moral and ethical values; and leverage.
