Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards given varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a full-time student or a full-time participant in a cooperative work-study program recognized and supported by the educational institution.
  3. Must be enrolled as a college or university student in an engineering or science program.
  4. Must be a TAPPI student member or an undergraduate member of a TAPPI student chapter.
  5. Must be able to show a significant interest in the paper industry.
  6. Must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in the fall.

Description: This scholarship is available for international and U.S. college sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are in an engineering or science program and show a significant interest in the pulp and paper industry. Students must be TAPPI student members or undergraduate members of a TAPPI student chapter.

Additional Information: The purpose of the Paper and Board Division Scholarship Program is to encourage talented science and engineering students to pursue careers in the paper industry and to utilize their talents in advancing the science and technology of papermaking. The Paper and Board Division focuses on the process of manufacturing paper and paperboard including the mechanical preparation of fibers prior to the paper machine, the preparation and evaluation of the effect of nonfibrous materials for paper and paperboard manufacture, surface application on the paper machine, and paper machine operation including auxiliary equipment from the high density chest to the winder. The selection of the recipients of the Paper and Board Division Scholarships will be made by the division scholarship committee, with the advice and consent of the division chairman and the division steering committee. Preference in the selection of scholarship recipients will be given to those applicants able to demonstrate a seriousness of purpose in pursuing a course of study related to the science and technology of the paper industry and an intent to make a career in the industry. In making its selections, the scholarship committee will not only consider the documentation submitted but may also, if it so chooses, conduct interviews with individual applicants, by telephone if personal interviews are not practical.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available online on the Technical Association for the Pulp, Paper, and Converting Industry (TAPPI) website under the 'Honors' tab. A complete application package must include the following: a completed 'Scholarship Checklist'; a completed 'General Information Form' (only one form needs to be submitted to apply for multiple scholarships); an official transcript; letters of recommendation from faculty members as required by each particular division's scholarship; and additional letters of recommendation from persons (other than relatives) who are familiar with the applicant's character, interests in the industries served by TAPPI in accordance with each particular division's scholarship, school activities, leadership roles, and educational accomplishments. The application and all additional materials must be sent to TAPPI either by mail or email and be received by the deadline date. If applying by mail, the student's school must send the transcript directly to TAPPI. If applying by email, all additional documents may be scanned and emailed.
