Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually according to the number of college students meeting the eligiblity requirements in any given year. Last year, two scholarships were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must demonstrate the intent to practice law and promote the rights of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community.
  3. Must be a third-year or fourth-year law student currently enrolled in an accredited law school at the time of application.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Description: This scholarship is available for third-year and fourth-year U.S. law students who demonstrate the intent to practice law and promote the rights of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community. Students need not be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered themselves to apply.

Additional Information: Please note: Students need not be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered themselves to apply. A scholarship committee, which may be composed of members of Equity Foundation, or members or friends of the lesbian/gay community, will review each candidate's application. A personal interview may be arranged for finalists. The recipients of the Bill and Ann Shepherd Legal Scholarship will be chosen upon completion of the application and interview process. Successful candidates will have demonstrated: ability to meet the eligibility guidelines and clarity of educational objectives. Financial need will be considered. Recipients will be notified in late July or early August.

Award Amount: The average scholarship award is $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. Applications are available by contacting the Equity Foundation with the information provided at the website. Applications may also be obtained at all Oregon law schools. In addition to the completed application, the following materials must be submitted: transcripts; a statement of 250 words or less addressing why the applicant thinks he/she should be awarded this scholarship; and two letters of recommendation, one from a law school instructor and the other from a person of the student's choice, speaking of his/her history of involvement in the sexual minorities communities.All completed applications and supporting materials must be received by the deadline date.
