Award Amount

$2,000 to $4,000 annually, non-renewable. The award will be disbursed in three equal installments: the first when the student receives the fellowship; the second at the beginning of the second academic term after the first payment, upon confirmation of satisfactory progress by his/her academic or project adviser; and the third upon completion of the project.


A minimum of one award offered annually.

Additional Information

All awards will be based on merit, without regard to race, gender, or religion. Minority applicants are encouraged to apply. Fellows are expected to prepare a research project on community associations, which is defined as any association that governs a common-interest community of any kind where homeowners support the association with mandatory financial assessments and are subject to use and aesthetic restrictions. The foundation is especially interested in substantive papers from the social sciences, which place community association housing within political or economic organizational models. No project prepared as part of the Byron Hanke Fellowship shall be eligible for the Foundation for Community Association Research Award of Excellence. Applicants will be notified by July 1.
