Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must attend a law school in the United States.
  3. Must be a currently enrolled law school student pursuing a J.D. or L.L.B.

Description: This writing contest is available for students currently enrolled in an accredited law school in the United States. There is no page limitation or restriction on the topic except that the writing must be on a legal subject.

Application requirements for the Judge John R. Brown Scholarship are:

  • Recommendation letter
  • Paper on a legal topic
  • Cover sheet
Additional Information: Only one paper may be submitted by any faculty member or legal professional, and only one paper may be submitted on behalf of any student. Final judging will be performed by a panel consisting of a law school dean, a federal judge and a law school professor who will be appointed by the foundation. The recipient of the Brown Award will be notified by Aug. 31.

Award Amount: $10,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Application information for this legal writing contest is available on the Brown Sims P.C. Attorneys at Law website by clicking on the 'Firm Activities' button in the upper right hand corner. To enter, students must submit four copies of a current legal writing, along with a letter of recommendation by a law school faculty member or other legal professional. In addition, the applicant must attach a cover sheet with the following personal information: title of the paper, name, address, and the telephone number and email address of the student and the name of his/her recommender. There is no page limitation or restriction on the topic except that the writing must be on a legal subject. All submissions must be postmarked by the deadline date and sent to the address provided.
