Number of Awards & Eligibility: Sixteen awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must major in food science/technology.
  3. Must attend one of the IFT-approved colleges or universities. A listing of the approved schools is available at www.ift.org.
  4. Must be a high school senior or previous graduate entering college for the first time.
  5. Must enroll full time.

Description: This award is for U.S. high school seniors who intend to major in food science. The student must attend an IFT-approved school.

Application requirements for the IFT Freshman Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Official Transcript
  • Recommendation letter
  • Guidance counselor form
Additional Information: A list of approved schools and eligible degrees is available on the IFT website. Students must plan to enroll in one of these schools and programs.

Award Amount: Fifteen scholarships of $1,000 each will be given. An additional scholarship of $1,000, designated as the IFT Student Association George R. Foster Memorial Scholarship, will also be given. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. Each student must submit a complete new application each year. The award will be distributed in two equal installments, one on Aug. 15 and one on Jan. 15.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) website. The completed application must be submitted to the department head of the educational institution that the student is planning to attend. The application should not be sent to IFT. All applications should be typed and in English. As part of the completed application, the student must submit a brief biographical statement regarding why he/she would like to become a food scientist and/or food technologist. The statement must be typed on the application form and cannot be longer than the space allotted. The student must also arrange with his/her high school to send the following information directly to the department head of the IFT-approved university he/she is planning to attend: an official and complete transcript of his/her high school record; and the 'Confidential Recommendation by High School' form, completed by his/her principal, guidance counselor, or other appropriate official of the high school. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
