Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies depending on the number of qualified applicants and the amount of available funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be 18 years of age or older as of August 1.
  2. Must be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or United Kingdom at time of application.
  3. Must be able to complete at least one summer internship in math or science at a DoD facility.
  4. Must be a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  5. Must be currently enrolled in a regionally accredited US college or university and have a high school diploma/GED.

Description: The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and guaranteed civilian employment with the Department of Defense (DoD) upon degree completion. Scholarships are awarded for a minimum of 1.5 years and a maximum of 5 years of funding.

Additional Information: SMART Scholars enter the program to pursue their education in some of the leading STEM fields currently in high demand by the United States Government. The program offers scholarships for bachelors, masters and PhD students pursuing STEM. While in school, students will receive full tuition, monthly stipends, health insurance and book allowances, as well as summer internships that range from 8 to 12 weeks. Upon degree completion, scholars begin working in a civilian position with their sponsoring facility. SMART will fund the total cost of full-time tuition at the regionally accredited U.S. college or university of the applicant's choice. Notifications of awards are traditionally made in the spring.

Award Amount: The scholarship value is up to $38,000 per year of study. Awards are renewable provided that the student maintains satisfactory academic progress.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $38,000.

The application window opens August through December each year. Applicants complete a form on provider website and must provide supporting materials. This includes references, academic background information, transcripts, and test scores. Applicants must click the "Submit Application" button to submit the application.
