Design Your Signature Hat Contest!

American Hat Makers, a renowned company in the hat industry, has been handcrafting exceptional hats for over half a century. Founded by Gary Watrous, the company’s humble beginnings trace back to the 1970s when Gary started selling handmade leather goods from the trunk of his Chevy station wagon. Today, American Hat Makers has become one of the largest hat manufacturers worldwide. Gary Watrous, the visionary behind American Hat Makers, initially dabbled in leatherwork, creating belts, wallets, and purses with a small investment. However, when he crafted a leather hat for himself in the mid-70s, his true passion ignited. Hats quickly became Gary’s sole artistic focus, and he dedicated himself to perfecting his craft. Garth Watrous, Gary’s son and the current owner of American Hat Makers, was raised amidst the captivating world of hat making. Observing his father’s exceptional artistry and craftsmanship, Garth developed a deep appreciation for the trade. After earning his business degree from San Diego State University, Garth joined his father in 2005 as a partner, bringing his entrepreneurial spirit and expertise to the company. Driven by a desire for continual growth, Garth has propelled American Hat Makers to unprecedented success, doubling its business not once but twice. Yet, his aspirations reach even higher. Garth’s unwavering goal for American Hat Makers is crystal clear: to establish the company as the world’s leading hat manufacturer. With a rich legacy of artisanal craftsmanship and an unwavering commitment to excellence, American Hat Makers continues to create exceptional hats that capture the imagination and style of hat enthusiasts around the globe.

$1,000 Scholarship Opportunity for Fashion Designers

Hello designers! We are super excited that you are entering our sustainable fashion competition/show. Up to $1,000 of scholarship money will be awarded, so let your friends know of this opportunity! Read on for more details: Theme Description: The Golden Rod by Maggie Smith contains a collection of poems that explore “parenthood, solitude, love, and memory”. Because of its ability to survive in diverse, harsh environments, the golden rod itself represents good luck and a pioneering spirit. Our theme, The Golden Ro(a)d takes a spin on this book by exploring different stages of life through the imagery of seasons. We hope that the designs will exemplify the ideas of personal progress, growth, and moments of solitude, joy, and clarity along with life’s turbulences. Preliminary Round (Deadline February 12th, 11:59 PM EST): Send in pictures of your (sustainable/up-cycled) fashion product. You must have designed and crafted the look yourself from sustainable materials. In this round, our executive board and seasoned professionals from the fashion industry will be rating your pieces and providing feedback and commentary. A total of 15 pieces will advance to the semi-finals. Pieces that advance to semi-finals will be shipped to Atlanta, GA for the fashion show on April 15th. Semi-finalists will be announced on the 17th of February through email. Semi-Finals Round (Pieces will be shipped in by March 17th): Another step closer to the grand prize! As a Semi-Finalist, your pieces will be on stage in front of a live audience and a judges panel at the Emory Student Center in Multi-Purpose Room #3 in Atlanta. There will also be a live stream of your piece on the catwalk on our Youtube Channel. Finals (Announced at the fashion show on April 15th): Our panel of judges will take part in voting, but so will the audience! We will have both an Youtube live voting round on a Google form as well as an in-person voting for the general audience. Auction: Designers who allow Altkey to store their pieces post the fashion show will have the opportunity to auction off their piece for additional scholarship money in front of the Altkey creatives network. If permission is not granted, the piece will be mailed back to the designer. You may find out more on our website: https://www.altkeyofficial.org/
