Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled for a minimum of three credit hours per semester.
  3. Must pursue a career in special education. For purposes of this scholarship, 'special education' is defined as teacher training for work with the mentally and physically disabled.
  4. Must be a resident of North America.
  5. Must be entering the junior or senior year of college. Please note: Applicants who are clergy or have a religious vocation, or those who are studying at a college in California, Canada, or Virginia, may use the scholarship for post-graduate study.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for North American college juniors and seniors. The applicant must be enrolled full time and pursue a career in special education.

Additional Information: The International Order of Alhambra is a fraternal organization of Catholic men dedicated to assisting persons developmentally disabled by mental retardation. They provide assistance through the order's scholarship program to educate undergraduate students studying to become special education teachers, and they provide assistance to persons engaged in giving care and comfort to persons developmentally disabled. Please note: The applicant does not have to be Catholic to apply for this award.

Award Amount: The amount of the award varies each year depending on funding and other factors. Last year's awards were $500 per semester, non-renewable. Students may reapply each semester.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Additional information can be found on the Order of Alhambra website. Applications are available from the state chapters of the International Order of Alhambra. If there is not a chapter in the applicant's state, he/she can obtain an application by contacting the national headquarters using the contact information provided. In addition to the completed application, students must submit a brief statement of purpose, of no more than one page, which describes her/his career choice and social impact of his/her's particular career. Also, a letter from the recognized school or college confirming enrollment for special education courses and the study major for the semester checked on the front of the application must accompany all applications. The confirmation letter should be submitted on college or university letterhead, specifying courses selected. The courses have to agree with what is on the application. The letter from the college must be typed and affixed with the college seal and registrar's signature. Applications should be sent to the sponsor or sponsoring caravan for further processing. If the sponsor is not available, applications can be sent directly to the home office. The home office must receive all application materials by the deadline date.
