Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. resident.
  3. Must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student.
  4. Must pursue an mechanical engineering or related science degree through an ABET-accredited program. A list of ABET-accredited programs is available online at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx.
  5. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher if a high school senior, or 3.0 or higher if a current college student.
  6. Must have an SAT I score of 1220 or higher OR an ACT composite score of 27 or higher.

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. high school seniors and current undergraduate students who are enrolled in an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering or related science program. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher if current college students or 3.5 or higher if high school seniors; students must have an SAT score of 1220 or higher or an ACT score of 27 or higher.

Additional Information: A Kettering graduate, Dan Hancock enjoyed a 43-year automotive engineering career at General Motors where he served as Vice President of Global Strategic Alliances. A longtime SAE member, Dan is an SAE Fellow who served on the SAE Foundation Board of Trustees, the SAE International Board of Directors and currently serves as the SAE International President. In 2011, Dan was elected to the National Academy of Engineering - one of the highest honors an engineer can receive. For current college students, preference will be given to Kettering University students and students with participation in extracurricular activities relating to academic degree or career intent (such as, but not limited to, CDS projects) that indicates leadership potential. Scholarship recipients will be notified by June 30. All SAE scholarship winners will be posted in July/August.

Award Amount: $5,500 annually, non-renewable. Students will be eligible to receive the scholarship for multiple years but the student must reapply each year and be selected by the SAE Scholarship Committee.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,500.

Applications are available online from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) website by clicking on the appropriate link for the student's level of study. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a copy of his/her SAT/ACT scores if not included on his/her transcript (copy printed from website acceptable); two letters of recommendation (high school seniors only); and an official high school or college transcript. Students must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be eligible for this scholarship. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Application materials must be submitted online before the deadline date.
