Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. resident.
  3. Must be a college sophomore at time of application.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  5. Must pursue an engineering or related degree through an ABET-accredited program. A list of accredited programs is available online at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx.

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. college sophomores who are pursuing an ABET-accredited engineering or related program. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Additional Information: Established in 2007 through a generous contribution from Toyota, this scholarship was created in memory of the late David Hermance to recognize his contributions to hybrid and advanced technology vehicles in North America. Mr. Hermance was Executive Engineer for Advanced Technology Vehicles at the Toyota Technical Center in Gardena, California and was a major force behind the Prius hybrid. He was a "passionate advocate for the hybrid car" who testified before Congress about alternative-fuel vehicles. Scholarship recipients will be notified by June 30. All SAE scholarship winners will be posted in July/August.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available online from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) website by clicking on the "Junior Year of College Scholarships" link. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit an official college transcript. Application materials must be submitted online by the deadline.
