Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a full-time student.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must pursue a degree in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology, or a closely related engineering field of study at an accredited college or university the United States.
  4. Must have a minimum of one parent or grandparent who has been an SME member in good standing for the last two years (includes step-mothers and step-fathers).
  5. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  6. Must reside within the United States or Canada.
  7. Must be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate student at time of application. The applicant must have no more than 30 credit hours completed.

Description: This award is for U.S. and international students who have a minimum of one parent or grandparent who has been an SME member in good standing for the last two years (includes step-mothers and step-fathers). The applicant must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student who has completed no more than 30 college credit hours and have a 3.0 grade point average or higher.

Application requirements for the SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship are:

Additional Information: The SME Education Foundation Family Scholarships are awarded annually to students who meet the criteria below. Four students will be selected, one student will receive a $40,000 scholarship payable over four years. The remaining three students will each receive $20,000 scholarships payable over four years. Must have at least one parent or grandparent who has been an SME member in good standing for the last two years. This includes step-mothers and step-fathers. Pursuing a degree in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology, or a closely related engineering field of study at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. Graduating High School senior or undergraduate student with up to 30 credit hours completed. Must enroll full-time at the college or university of choice. Overall High School GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Minimum SAT score of 1000 and/or ACT score of 21. Must reside within the United States or Canada. Demonstrate academic excellence and an interest in manufacturing engineering or related technology Renewal Requirements: Must comply with all eligibility requirements and: Maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Submit Intent to Renew Form and copies of the previous year’s transcripts to the Foundation prior to the start of the next academic year.

Award Amount: Up to $40,000 offered in total, payable for over four years. That's $10,000 per year for four years. Three other students will receive $20,000 payable over four years, which is $5,000 per year for four years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $160,000.

Applications are available on the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation website. The applicant must first visit the website and complete the online entry form. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit a student statement of 300 words or less addressing the topics listed online; a student resume; official transcripts; and two letters of recommendation. The applicant is strongly encouraged to visit the SME website for specific details and instructions about each of these application components. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by the deadline.
