Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two scholarships offered annually. The VLWA would prefer to award one scholarship to an undergraduate student and one to a graduate student. If there are not suitable applicants in both categories, the two scholarships may both be given in a single category, or only one scholarship may be awarded. If there are many outstanding applicants, additional scholarships may be awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Virginia.
  3. Must be a student in good standing at any Virginia accredited college or university.
  4. Must have successfully completed, or will complete by the award date, two or more semesters of undergraduate study.
  5. Must be enrolled on a full-time basis if an undergraduate student, or a part-time basis or higher if a graduate student.
  6. Must be enrolled in a curriculum related to water resources including but not limited to: biology, conservation, ecology, engineering, environmental science, geology, hydrology, limnology, stormwater management, water quality, or wildlife studies. Other areas related to water resources may also qualify.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for international and U.S. students who are attending a Virginia college or university and are Virginia residents. Students must have completed two or more semesters of undergraduate study, and must be enrolled in a curriculum related to water resources.

Additional Information: The scholarship recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance, educational plans, and contribution to the field of water resources. Past scholarship recipients are allowed to reapply.

Award Amount: Up to $3,000 annually, non-renewable. The scholarship may be used only for tuition and fees.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available online on the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association (VLWA) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a description of experiences he/she has had relative to water resources and watershed management (including both salaried and volunteer experiences); a list of clubs and organizations related to water resources of which he/she is a member, including attendance at or participation in any VLWA events; a one-page statement explaining why he/she is deserving of this scholarship (should include academic experience, work experience, educational plans, and career objectives); and a copy of his/her current college transcripts. Please note: The student should also request that two non-family members write letters of recommendation and mail them independently to the address provided by the application deadline date. The completed application and all supplemental materials must be mailed to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date.
