Japan Exchange and Teaching Alumni Association of Northern California (JETAANC)

Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident.
  3. Must possess a sincere interest in Japan, as demonstrated by one or more years of directed interest.
  4. Must plan to attend as a full-time student an undergraduate program at an accredited two- or four-year institution of higher learning within the United States commencing in fall 2009.
  5. Must attend a public or private high school within the northern California or Nevada counties that JETAANC serves. This area includes Monterey, Kings, Tulane, and Inyo counties and all Californian counties north of them. It also includes all of Nevada. Please note: This excludes San Luis Obispo, Kern, San Bernadino, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, and Imperial counties in California.
  6. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. high school seniors who attend a public or private high school within the northern California or Nevada counties that JETAANC serves. Students must possess a sincere interest in Japan, as demonstrated by one or more years of directed interest.

  • Recommendation letters (2)
  • Essays (2)
Additional Information: Applications will be critiqued based on the applicant's demonstrated interest in Japan, academic accomplishments and interests, recommendations, reflection questions, and general impressions from the application form. A demonstrated financial need may be taken into consideration. The winner will be notified in May.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online on the Japan Exchange and Teaching Alumni Association of Northern California (JETAANC) website and must be completed online. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: his/her most recent high school transcript (original); two recommendation letters, each on letterhead and in a sealed envelope; and typed responses to the two essay questions on the application (see the application for details). All application materials should be saved and ready for upload at the time of application, as there is no way to save progress during the application process. Completed applications, including all supporting documents, must be completed online before the deadline date. Incomplete and late applications cannot be considered.
