Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must reside in Monroe or Middletown, Ohio.
  2. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must plan to major in journalism or communications.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  6. This award is for U.S. students.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school seniors in Monroe or Middletown, Ohio who plan to major in journalism or communications. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: This scholarship is provided in honor of Mrs. Saylor, an English teacher, journalist teacher, and advisor to the student newspaper at Lemon-Monroe High School from 1959 to 1976. Under the guidance of Deloris "Dodee" Saylor, Lemon-Monroe's newspaper The Mercury became an award-winning student newspaper. Many of her students have pursued related careers - and some to great success and national recognition. In 1976, Mrs. Saylor transferred to Middletown High School, where she continued her work in English, composition, journalism, and newspaper advising. Each year, a scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior from Monroe or Middletown Ohio who shares this passion for journalism. Preference will be given to students who are active participants in the school newspaper or other journalistic and communications outlets.

Award Amount: The amount of the award varies annually depending on the availability of funding and investment performance. In 2018, $2,100 will be available for new recipients.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,100.

To be considered for this award, students must submit an online application form, including the personal information section, family information, and financial information. In addition, the student must also submit a copy of his/her most recent high school transcripts including SAT/ACT scores, and a resume detailing work experience and/or community service participation. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by the deadline date.
