  1. Must be enrolled at Baylor University, Sam Houston State University, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, or University of North Texas.
  2. Must be an undergraduate or graduate student at the time of application.
  3. This award is for U.S. students.
  4. Must be majoring in journalism, communications, or a related field.

Description: The Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship is available for journalism majors at the following colleges and universities: Baylor University, Sam Houston State University, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and University of North Texas.

Additional Information: The Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship is provided in honor of Bess Whitehead Scott, the first woman reporter at The Houston Post. Over the course of her journalism career, from 1915 to 1940, she served as an example of what women could accomplish inside the news room and throughout the city. In her memory, this fund will provide an annual scholarship to a journalism or communications student at one of the following eligible universities: Baylor University, Sam Houston State University, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and University of North Texas. Award selection will consider academic achievement and financial need, as well as the demonstrated potential for a successful career in journalism. This scholarship is administered and managed through the Austin Community Foundation. Founded in 1977, the Austin Community Foundation has expanded to combine philanthropists, community leaders, and advanced financial management technologies. The foundation works to identify and assist the local populations in greatest need through a combination of scholarships, local initiatives, and grants. Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications and additional information about the Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship are available online at the Austin Community Foundation website. To apply for this award, students must complete the online application form and submit all documents and information required in the supplemental question section. For this scholarship, the following is required: copies of standardized test scores; a list of all awards and academic honors; a list of extracurricular activities including clubs, athletics, and other campus activities; a list of other hobbies, interests, and talents; a resume detailing the applicant's employment history; three samples of the student's journalism work; and an essay describing the applicant's career plans and goals. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by the deadline date. Any late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.
