This scholarship is provided in honor of Mrs. Saylor, an English teacher, journalist teacher, and advisor to the student newspaper at Lemon-Monroe High School from 1959 to 1976. Under the guidance of Deloris "Dodee" Saylor, Lemon-Monroe's newspaper The Mercury became an award-winning student newspaper. Many of her students have pursued related careers - and some to great success and national recognition. In 1976, Mrs. Saylor transferred to Middletown High School, where she continued her work in English, composition, journalism, and newspaper advising. Each year, a scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior from Monroe or Middletown Ohio who shares this passion for journalism. Preference will be given to students who are active participants in the school newspaper or other journalistic and communications outlets.
