Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten to fifteen awards offered annually. Last year, 11 awards were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a Native American.
  3. Must be pursuing a career in radio, television, or print (newspaper) journalism.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Native American high school seniors and college students who are pursuing a career in radio, television, or print journalism. Students must be members of NAJA to apply.

Additional Information: Applicants must become a member of NAJA prior to application if not already a member. Membership is $10 for high school students and $20 for college students.

Award Amount: $500 to $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $50,000.

Applications are available on the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) website. Students must be NAJA members to apply. Applications for membership are available on the membership page. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a cover letter stating financial need, area of interest, and his/her reasons for pursuing a journalism career, including plans after college; financial reports; official copies of school transcripts; a list of class enrollment for the upcoming academic year; a brief description of courses taken and grade level (college/university students only); three letters of recommendation from people familiar with his/her professional or academic work, such as editors, producers, teachers/professors, academic advisors, etc.; proof of enrollment in a state or federally recognized tribe (if the student is not enrolled, he/she should provide one of the documents listed on the application); work samples (magazine or newspaper clips, tapes, etc.) if available, or other samples of his/her work, such as class essays; a completed 'Scholarship Financial Profile' (part of the application); and a copy of his/her FAFSA report. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is available online, at high school guidance offices, or at college financial aid offices. The application and all supporting materials must be received by the deadline date. Applications can be mailed, faxed, or emailed using the contact information provided.
