Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Chittenden County, Vermont.
  3. Must demonstrate community service.
  4. Must seek a degree in public safety, including but not limited to, emergency medical services, fire service, law enforcement, or health care.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  6. Must be an incoming or current undergraduate or graduate student.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to Vermont students who reside in Chittenden County and are seeking a degree in public safety, including but not limited to, emergency medical services, fire service, health care, or law enforcement. Students must demonstrate financial need and community service.

Additional Information: This scholarship was established to honor John Hudson Savage in recognition of his 28 years of volunteer service to the town of Colchester as a member of the Colchester Rescue Squad. Applicants must attend an accredited postsecondary school approved for federal Title IV funding, and must demonstrate financial need. Selection is based on application documents and financial need. There are approximately 55 applicants for this award each year.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Applications are available from the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) website. Applications may be completed either online or in paper form beginning on November 1. Please note: The student is only required to submit one application for all scholarships for which he/she wishes to apply. In addition, if a particular document is required for more than one scholarship, the student need only submit one copy of that document. To apply, the student must complete and submit the VSAC Unified Scholarship Application and submit the following materials: a letter of recommendation; an essay; and official transcripts. NOTE: Required additional materials MUST conform to the detailed instructions in the VSAC Scholarships Booklet. The student is highly encouraged to review the booklet thoroughly when assembling materials. Electronic applications and any digital versions of supplemental materials must be submitted by midnight on the deadline date. Paper applications or any supplemental materials in paper form must be postmarked by the deadline date.
