Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must attend school in the United States.
  3. Must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school at the time of application.
  4. Must author an essay on a cutting edge legal issue affecting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and/or Intersex community.

Description: International and U.S. students studying at an accredited law school in the United States are eligible to enter this writing competition. Students must submit an essay on a cutting-edge legal issue affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or intersex community.

Additional Information: Established in memory of Michael Greenberg, former NLGLA board member and Philadelphia attorney who died in 1996 from complications of AIDS, this exciting competition is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing outstanding law student scholarship on the legal issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex persons.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable. In addition, the winners will receive paid registration, airfare, and lodging for the annual Lavender Law Career Fair & Conference. The first place essay will also appear in the 'Journal of Law and Sexuality'.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Information is available on the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association (NLGLA) website. There is no application for this award. To enter, the applicant must write an essay on a cutting-edge legal issues affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or intersex community. The essay must adhere to the following guidelines to be considered: written in standard Note format, including Bluebook 18th edition citation form; in English; a maximum of 25 pages in length (including footnotes); double-spaced, with one-inch marginas and 12-point Times New Roman font. All entries must be submitted electronically via email to [email protected] , in either Word or PDF format. Entrants should not include their name or the name of their school on the competition paper itself. Instead, participants should submit a cover page indicating their name, school, permanent address, and telephone number. All completed entries must be received on or before the deadline date.
