Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must meet university criteria for enrollment as a full-time doctoral student.
  3. Must be pursuing a doctoral degree in health education.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be an AAHE member who is preparing to develop, implement, and/or evaluate health education programs for children and youth.
  6. Must be a current doctoral student who is enrolled at an accredited college or university (not a school of public health).
  7. Must have a minimum of three years teaching experience at the K-12 level.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Graduate students with three years teaching experience at the K-12 level who are pursuing a degree in health education at an accredited college or university are eligible for this award.

Additional Information: The scholarship recipient will be recognized at the annual awards luncheon at the SOPHE convention. Prior SOPHE scholarship recipients and doctoral students at schools of public health are not eligible. The applicant must be an SOPHE member and a doctoral student at an accredited college/university (not a school of public health), preparing to develop, implement, and/or evaluate health education programs for children and youth. Selection criteria includes academic achievement, the applicant's potential for advancing the health of children and youth, professional goals, and the caliber of his/her documents. The recipient will be notified by Feb. 15 by the Chairperson of the Pollock Trust.

Award Amount: $1,500 annually, non-renewable. The award will include a $1,000 scholarship which may be used at the discretion of the recipient. The second component of the award is a $500 professional development stipend to be awarded at an annual meeting of SOPHE.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Applications are available online from the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit a current resume or curriculum vitae using the format described on the SOPHE website; a transcript from the institution granting his/her most recent degree; any coursework that fulfills requirements for the current doctoral degree program or verification of admittance to a doctoral program; a narrative two part statement of no more than five pages in length, including professional goals, a description of his/her responsibility to the profession, and how his/her K-12 teaching experience supports and gives direction to his/her life (subtitles should be included for each of the three areas); and two letters of recommendation from professional individuals, which address academic status, leadership potential and career commitment (one letter must be from the applicant's advisor or a major professor). All application materials must be submitted as one word, pdf, or image document by 11:59 PM EST on the deadline date.
