Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding. In 2018, 19 awards will be provided.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be accepted at or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with an aviation related curriculum (aerospace, aerodynamics, engineering, airport management, etc.) in pursuit of a degree leading to a career as a professional pilot.
  3. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older student planning to enroll or currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.
  5. Must provide evidence of his/her contribution to the LGBT community.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Students who are 18 years of age or older and have been accepted to or are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with an aviation related curriculum (aerospace, aerodynamics, engineering, airport management, etc.) in pursuit of a degree leading to a career as a professional pilot are eligible for this award.

Application requirements for the NGPA Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Essay (2)
  • Recommendation letter
  • Official Transcript
  • LGBT contrib.
  • Documented aviation commit.
Additional Information: Scholarship awards will not discriminate on the basis of an individual's sexual orientation. The strength of the applicants commitment to supporting and bettering the Gay and Lesbian community is one of the criteria established by the NGPA Education Fund in considering applicants. The applicant must furnish specific information showing evidence of financial need. Scholarship funds cannot be used to pay for the basic private certificate; they must be applied towards advanced fight training at a government certified flight school or to college tuition if enrolled in an accredited aviation degree program.

Award Amount: Between $1,000 and $7,000 annually, non-renewable. Recipients may reapply for and receive the scholarship a maximum of four times.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in June when applications are accepted. Applications are available from the National Gay Pilot's Association (NGPA) website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit the following: a social narrative essay; a career narrative essay; one or more letters of recommendation; his/her latest high school or college transcript including FAA written (aeronautical knowledge) test scores; evidence of his/her contribution to the LGBT community (examples provided within the application); and documented commitment to the aviation community. The applicant should refer to the application for specific details regarding submission. Completed application with all supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
