Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In the 2013-2014 academic year (the most recent year for which information is available), there were 14 awards given. Please note that this program also provides awards to current Delaware library employees.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a legal resident of Delaware.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  4. Must be enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's degree program of library and information science. Please note: Preference will be given to current employees of a public library, county department library, public school library, or state agency library or archive.
  5. Must be currently enrolled in an eligible program.
  6. Must enroll full time or part time.

Description: This award is available for Delaware residents who are enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's degree program of library and information science.

Application requirements for the Ada Leigh Soles Memorial Professional Librarian and Archivist Incentive Program – Master’s Students are:

Additional Information: It is the intent and purpose of this program to enable and encourage academically talented Delawareans to pursue careers as librarians and archivists in the public libraries, public school libraries, state agencies and political subdivisions of Delaware. Academic record, community service, and financial need are considered. Preference is given to current employees of a public library, country department library, public school library, or a state agency library or archive in Delaware.

Award Amount: The award is given in the form of a forgivable loan. The loan cannot exceed the student's cost of tuition, mandatory fees, and other direct educational expenses. The loan is renewable. The loan will be forgiven at the rate of two years of qualifying employment for each year of loan. Qualifying employment is employment as a librarian or archivist in a public library, public school library, state agency, or political subdivision in Delaware.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $11,600.

Applications are available at the Delaware Higher Education Office (DHEO) website. Please note: Students must apply by completing the online Common Merit Application. Most DHEO programs will require the student to submit additional documents including an unofficial transcript, SAT scores, and updated college enrollment information by the scholarship deadline. Students should follow the instructions in the Common Merit Application carefully. Each student must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and in college financial aid offices. The Common Merit Application must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on the deadline date.
