Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In the 2013-2014 academic year (the most recent year for which information is available), there were 14 awards given. Please note that this program also provides awards to students pursuing master's degrees.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be a legal resident of Delaware.
  4. Must be enrolled in a program of study leading to a bachelor's degree or a doctoral degree.
  5. Must be a current employee who has worked at least two years at a Delaware public library, county department library, public school library, or state agency library or archive.
  6. Must be planning to continue employment as a librarian or archivist in a public library, public school library, state agency, or political subdivision in Delaware in order for the loan to be forgiven.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This forgivable loan program is available to Delaware residents pursuing a bachelor's or doctoral degree program. Students must have worked at least two years at a Delaware public library, county department library, public school library, or state agency library or archive.

Additional Information: It is the intent and purpose of this program to enable and encourage academically talented Delawareans to pursue careers as librarians and archivists in the public libraries, public school libraries, state agencies and political subdivisions of Delaware. Academic record, community service, and financial need are considered for all applicants.

Award Amount: The award is given in the form of a forgivable loan. The loan cannot exceed the student's cost of tuition, mandatory fees, and other direct educational expenses. The loan is renewable for up to three additional years for undergraduate students and up to one additional year for graduate students. The loan will be forgiven at the rate of two years of qualifying employment for each year of loan. Qualifying employment is employment as a librarian or archivist in a public library, public school library, state agency, or political subdivision in Delaware.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $11,600.

Applications are available at the Delaware Higher Education Office (DHEO) website. Most DHEO programs will require the student to submit additional documents including an unofficial transcript, SAT scores, and updated college enrollment information by the scholarship deadline. Students should follow the instructions in the Common Merit Application carefully. Each student must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and in college financial aid offices. The application must be submitted by July 15th.
