Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 13 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be Hispanic, American Indian, African-American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or from another racial group historically underrepresented in the medical profession.
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must be enrolled in medical school at the time of application.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Additional Information: The AMA Foundation, through the Minority Scholars Award, is working to increase the number of minority physicians to better represent the needs of our increasingly diverse society. Hispanic, American Indian, African-American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian populations have been relatively under-represented in medicine, but studies have documented that physician diversity is helpful in: increasing access for underserved populations; increasing patient satisfaction; and ensuring culturally competent care. The Minority Scholars Award program not only encourages diversity in medicine and helps to alleviate some student debt, but it also rewards commitment to the elimination of healthcare disparities, outstanding academic achievements, leadership activities, and community involvement.

Award Amount: $10,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Information about this award can be found on the American Medical Association website, at the address provided. Applications may be completed through the AMA online application portal, under the heading "Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship Program." Nomination forms are available but must be requested by an advisor or program coordinator at the student's medical school. All nominations and supporting documents must be submitted, through the student's school, and received by the deadline date.
