Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In 2015, nine awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must meet one of the following criteria: be working a minimum of 20 hours per week at an AH&LA member hotel with at least 12 months' hotel experience; OR be a dependent of a qualified employee, and have past employment in some capacity in the hospitality industry. The student should contact the AH&LA's membership department at 202-289-3171 or [email protected] to confirm his/her hotel is a member.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  4. Must be enrolled in a hospitality management program.
  5. Must enroll as a part-time or full-time student.
  6. Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. high school seniors or current undergraduate students pursuing a hospitality management program are eligible for this award. Applicants must be actively employed or be the dependent of an employee who is actively employed by a hotel or motel that is a member of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA).

Application requirements for the American Express Academic Scholarship Program are:

Additional Information: Applications will be evaluated according to the following categories: academics, related work experience, extracurricular activities, financial need, honors, and personal attributes.

Award Amount: Between $500 and $2,000 depending on the student's enrollment status. Full-time students in a baccalaureate program are awarded $2,000; part-time students in a baccalaureate program are awarded $1,000; full-time students in an associate's program are awarded $1,000; and part-time students in an associate's program are awarded $500. All awards are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,125.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in November for a refreshed application deadline date. All students must apply via the AH&LEF online application. The student need only complete one application to apply for all scholarships for which he/she is eligible. As part of the online application, the student must provide the following supporting materials: an essay of 500 words or less describing his/her personal background; financial information, to include anticipated expenses for the upcoming academic year, financial data from his/her most recent tax return, and financials to date; and his/her most recent college, high school, or GED transcript that includes a cumulative grade point average based upon a 4.0 scale (strongly advised to upload transcript to application). Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the deadline date.
