  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a current graduate student.
  4. Must be in the process of completing a dissertation on the history of the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences.

Description: U.S. students who are in the process of completing a dissertation on the history of the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences are eligible for this award. Candidates must be members or student members of the American Meteorological Society.

Application requirements for the AMS Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science are:

Additional Information: Please note: Applicants must be members or student members of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Membership information is available online at www.ametsoc.org/MEMB/index.html. The goal of the graduate fellowship is to support dissertation topics in the history of the atmospheric, or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, and to foster close working relations between historians and scientists. An effort will be made to place the student into a mentoring relationship with an AMS member at an appropriate institution. Applicants are encouraged to check with AMS in early March if they have not received written notification regarding the status of their application package.

Award Amount: The Fellowship carries a $15,000 stipend and will support one year of dissertation research. Fellowships cannot be deferred and must be used for the year awarded, but can be used to support research at a location away from the student's institution, provided the plan is approved by the student's thesis advisor.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $15,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in October for a refreshed application deadline date. Application information is available online from the American Meteorogical Society (AMS) website. There is no application form required for this award. To apply, the student must submit the following materials: a cover letter with his/her curriculum vitae; official undergraduate and graduate transcripts; a typewritten, detailed description of his/her dissertation topic and proposed research plan (no more than 10 pages); and three letters of recommendation (including one from his/her dissertation advisor). Application packages and supporting materials should be sent to the postal address provided, Attn: History Fellowship. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all materials are received at AMS Headquarters by the closing date, or postmarked by the deadline date.
