Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. *Please note: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of students meeting the eligibility requirements in any give year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must pursue a career as a physical therapist assistant.
  4. Must be a member of one of the following racial/ethnic minority groups: African American or black, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native or Hispanic/Latino.
  5. Must be enrolled in the final academic year of an accredited or developing professional physical therapist education program.
  6. Must have contributed to minority community participation and service activities.

Description: This award is available to U.S. citizens and permanent legal residents who are an ethnic minority and are studying in their final year of a physical therapist assistant program.

Additional Information: The purpose of the award is to acknowledge and reward demonstrated participation in minority affairs and services, the potential for superior achievements and academic excellence. Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria: demonstrated evidence of contributions in the area of minority affairs and services with an emphasis on contributions made while enrolled in a physical therapy education program; potential to contribute to the profession of physical therapy (addressing honors and awards, past/present physical therapy related activities, demonstrated leadership/offices held, clarity of written communication and ability to articulate realistic goals and plans, clinical performance, critical thinking abilities, and community service); and scholastic achievement. The student must complete all degree requirements (clinical and didactic) and/or be eligible to graduate between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of the following year.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a copy of his/her transcript of all physical therapy coursework completed to date; an essay of 600 words or less on the three questions outlined in the application; a separate personal information fact sheet, in a format similar to a curriculum vitae (see application for details); and three letters of recommendation, to be completed by the applicant's physical therapy academic program, a physical therapist clinician and a person able to verify the applicant's contributions to the minority community. The application package must be submitted online by the close of business on the deadline date. Faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted.
