Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In previous years, 12 awards were provided.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled full time in a four- or five-year program leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology. The curriculum must be accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) or a comparable accreditation in Canada and Mexico.
  3. Must pursue a career in engineering and have a potential interest in a railway engineering career.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  5. Must have completed at least one quarter or semester in college to apply for this undergraduate award.

Description: This award is available for U.S. or international undergraduate college students who have completed one or more quarters or semesters of a four- or five-year engineering or engineering technology program.

Application requirements for the AREMA Educational Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship Program are:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter
Additional Information: The applicant must be enrolled in a four- or five-year program leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology in a curriculum which has been accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (or comparable accreditation in Canada and Mexico).

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Recipients may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association (AREMA) website. The applicant must submit one application to be considered for all AREMA scholarships. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: a resume containing personal data, work experience, education information and any other information the applicant feels is appropriate; an official transcript, which includes college level work completed at least through the prior spring semester, plus courses currently enrolled in (printed computer or Internet copies of transcript will be accepted); two letters of recommendation (one must be from a faculty member, and the other may be from another faculty member, present or former employer, AREMA member, or other responsible person); and a cover letter, not exceeding 350 words, giving reasons why he/she is deserving of an AREMA Scholarship. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
