Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a college junior or senior in the upcoming academic year.
  3. Must be enrolled in a mechanical engineering baccalaureate program in good standing.
  4. Must be enrolled full time.
  5. Must attend a school within the area covered by the ASME Metropolitan Section (New York metro area). The following schools are eligible: City College/CUNY; College of Staten Island; Columbia University; Cooper Union; Manhattan College; NYC Technology College of City University; Polytechnic Institute of New York University (Brooklyn, NY); and SUNY/Maritime College.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. and international students studying mechanical engineering at select colleges in the New York City metro area. The award recipient will be selected on the basis of scholastic ability, character, integrity, leadership, and potential contribution to the mechanical engineering profession.

Application requirements for the ASME Metropolitan Section John Rice Memorial Scholarship are:

  • Recommendation letter(s) (up to 2)
  • ASME membership
  • Financial information
Additional Information: Applicants must be enrolled in an ABET-accredited school for the upcoming academic year. Information regarding accreditation status is available online at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx. Applicants also must have established a grade point average in their degree programs to qualify. If applicants have not established a grade point average at the college level, they are not eligible to apply. The award recipient will be selected on the basis of scholastic ability, character, integrity, leadership, and potential contribution to the mechanical engineering profession. All applicants will be notified of the scholarship results between June 15 and July 1. Scholarship money will be sent to scholarship winners by the end of August.

Award Amount: $3,000 annually, non-renewable. Scholarship awardees from past years will not be selected to receive additional scholarships. Students must apply again each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.
