Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be currently enrolled in a master's degree program.
  5. Must be enrolled in a health education program.

Description: This award is available for students enrolled in a master's health education progam with a 3.0 or higher grade point average.

Application requirements for the Barbara A. Cooley Scholarship are:

Additional Information: The scholarship recipient will be recognized at the annual awards luncheon at the SHAPE America convention. Recipients will also receive a one-year complimentary membership in SHAPE. Prior SHAPE scholarship recipients are ineligible. Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria: professional goals, responsibility to the profession, teaching experience, potential to advance the practice of health education, and calibre of documents. The recipient will be notified in Dec. by the chairperson of the scholarship committee.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online from the Society of Health and Physical Educators of America (SHAPE) website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit each of the following materials in order: a typed, double-spaced current resume outlining the categories listed on the application; official transcripts from his/her most recent degree granting institution and transcripts of any coursework that fulfill requirements for his/her current degree program; a three-page, double-spaced narrative including his/her philosophy of health education, professional goals, and his/her assessment of current and future issues in health education; and three letters of recommendation from professional individuals in the academic major addressing his/her academic status, leadership potential and career commitment. Two of the letters must be from the applicant's advisor and a major professor. All application materials must be submitted simultaneously in a single envelope and received no later than the deadline date.
