Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually. Please note: The Foundation reserves the right to make no award or to award a prize or prizes totaling less than the full amount.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be currently enrolled. Students who have been accepted for future enrollment are NOT eligible.
  3. Must be enrolled full or part time.
  4. Must attend an accredited U.S. college or university.
  5. Must be a candidate for a broadcasting degree with an academic focus in radio broadcasting. Applicable majors include, but are not limited to: broadcast and emerging media, broadcast communications, broadcast journalism, broadcasting, broadcasting and mass communications, electronic media and broadcasting, and radio and television broadcast technology.
  6. Must be between the ages of 17 and 24 as of the application deadline date.
  7. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Description: This competition is open to current students who are pursuing a broadcasting degree with an academic focus in radio broadcasting. Students must be 17 to 24 years of age as of the application deadline, and must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Application requirements for the BMI Founders Award for Radio Broadcasting are:

  • Essay (written or video)
  • Transcript
  • Recommendation letter
Additional Information: The scholarship is awarded for the best original essay response submitted to the competition and recognizes a student with the potential to become an innovator in the rapidly changing field of broadcast radio. The BMI Foundation shall have the right (but shall have no obligation) to publicly distribute the winning entry on bmi.com, bmifoundation.org, and related websites and to authorize the reproduction and distribution on audio tape and/or CD of no more than 12 copies of the winning work. All other rights under the copyright law remain vested in the author. The winner, if any, will be announced in late spring 2019.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available online on the BMI Foundation, Inc. website. To apply, the student must submit an online application and provide an original essay response to one of the prompts listed on the BMI Foundation website regarding the radio/broadcasting industry. All contents of the submitted essay response must be wholly original and not based on any prior work. The entry may be submitted in typewritten or video format. Written submissions must be between 700 and 1,500 words in length. Video submissions must be between six and twelve minutes in length. The student must also provide a copy of his/her most recent transcript and one letter of recommendation from a full-time faculty member. Applications must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
