Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 15 to 20 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students. Please note: Non-U.S. citizens must be legally living and studying in Colorado with a valid visa that enables them to become employed.
  2. Must be majoring in accounting.
  3. Must be enrolled at one of Colorado's accredited colleges and/or universities.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  5. Must be enrolled for six or more credit hours per semester.
  6. Must have completed eight or more semester hours in accounting courses, including one upper division accounting course. Graduate students intending to pursue an accounting-related career are also eligible.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: High school graduates or older students who are pursuing an accounting course of study at accredited Colorado college or universities are eligible for this award. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and enroll in six or more credit hours per semester.

Application requirements for the COCPA General Educational Foundation Scholarship for College Students are:

Additional Information: This program includes the Mark J. Smith Scholarship. This scholarship is designated for a student from a single-parent household and is based on academics and financial need. Due to the restrictions of Colorado Constitutional Amendment 41, the Educational Foundation cannot award scholarships to public officers, members of the Colorado General Assembly, local government officials, government employees, or their spouses or dependent children. These restrictions may not apply to certain home rule counties or home rule municipalities.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable. The student may reapply each time the scholarship is offered. No preference is given to students who have already received a scholarship. Funds are paid directly to the school and may be applied to textbooks and CPA review materials purchased through the school, tuition and fees, and dormitory room and board. After one year, any remaining funds must be returned to the Educational Foundation.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available from the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants (COCPA) website and must be completed online. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: an official transcript from the school in which he/she is currently enrolled that includes his/her cumulative overall grade point average and calculates his/her cumulative accounting grade point average (no two-sided documents); and a typed essay of no more than two pages addressing the topics listed on the application. The deadline date is June 30 for fall quarter/semester.
