Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 28 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must plan to major in education with an emphasis on teaching.
  4. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  5. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate; 9 credits per semester for graduate).
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Preference is given to non-traditional students with at least two years of teaching experience.
  8. Preference is given to students of Hawaiian ethnicity or students from the neighboring islands that plan to teach in Hawaii.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in education with an emphasis on teaching and have a grade point average of 2.8 or higher. Preference is given to non-traditional students with at least two years of teaching experience and to students of Hawaiian ethnicity.

Additional Information: Dr. Hans Zimmerman established this foundation to provide financial assistance to individuals in Hawai'i wishing to pursue an education in a health field. During his long and productive career in Hawai'i, Dr. Zimmerman encouraged countless individuals to choose careers in medicine. At his death, additional assets came into the foundation so that it is now one of the largest scholarship funds in Hawai'i. All applicants for this award must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: Approximately $2,825 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,825.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the provider's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed at the provider's website; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. For this scholarship, the personal statement should address any community service that the student has been involved in and answer the question, "What is your philosophy of teaching?". Please note: The application will be automatically disqualified if the student does not discuss his/her philosophy of teaching in the personal statement. The applicant must also submit two letters of recommendation must also be submitted. These letters should be written by a teacher, counselor, minister, and/or employer who can comment on the student's overall character, achievement, and promise. The letters must be current (dated after April 1), contain the student's full name, and be signed by the recommender. A student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
