Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a Material Advantage student member.
  3. Must have an intended or declared major in metallurgy or materials science engineering (an applicant majoring in related science or engineering disciplines will be considered if he/she demonstrates a strong academic emphasis and interest in materials science).
  4. Must have junior or senior standing in an undergraduate program in the fall at a North American university.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Description: Students who have completed one or more years of a metallurgy or materials science engineerings and are members of ASM International are eligible for this award. Applications are available on the ASM Materials Education Foundation website.

Additional Information: The selection committee considers a variety of factors including academic achievement (grades, courses selected, interdisciplinary skills/interests), interest in the field (knowledge of metallurgy/materials engineering field, demonstrated interest through activities/jobs, potential for a related career) and personal qualities (motivation, social values, maturity, goals). Recipients will be notified by July 15.

Award Amount: $1,500 annually, non-renewable. The recipient may reapply for consideration the following year. No applicant may receive more than two consecutive scholarship awards.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Applications are available online from the ASM International website, in the offices of the university departments of metallurgy/materials, from faculty advisors of ASM student chapters, or from local ASM chapters. In addition to the completed online application, each student must submit a personal statement of no more than two pages (a resume may be included); a current transcript through the fall semester (an official student copy is acceptable); no more than two completed recommendation forms (on page five of the application), with one from a professor in his/her major department; and a photograph for publication. The applicant need only submit one application to be considered for all ASM scholarships for which he/she qualifies. All application materials should be submitted together online or postmarked by the deadline date.
